Scholarships For High School Seniors Facts
HomeFinanceFinancial aidScholarships for High School Seniors: What to KnowThis page may contain affiliate links.Nov 25, 2019Is your family shuffling through piles of private scholarship applications, hoping to cobble together some additional funding for college? If so, youââ¬â¢re certainly not the only ones. Many families focus on private scholarships for high school seniors, hoping that they will win enough money to make a difference in the college budget. Every dollar helps, but keep in mind that private scholarships are a small source of college funding. Most funding comes from the school itself. According to the College Board, around 47 percent of grants come directly from colleges, and they provided around $58.7 billion in funding for students in the 2016-17 school year. Hereââ¬â¢s what you need to know about scholarships for your senior! The Difference Between Need-Based and Merit-Based Aid Scholarships and other financial aid are broken into two basic categories. Need-based aid is for those who are financially struggling. Your need is either defined by the FAFSA or by the college itself. On the other hand, merit-based aid is money that your child is able to get based on good grades, test scores, community service, and other achievements. The first thing to determine as you approach college funding is whether you are going for need-based aid, merit-based aid, or both. From there, youââ¬â¢ll have a better focus both for scholarships for high school seniors and for choosing a generous school. Prestigious Schools Offer Need-Based Aid, Not Merit If your student has high hopes of getting a major merit-based scholarship from a place like Harvard or Yale, itââ¬â¢s important to make sure they understand that those schools donââ¬â¢t offer merit-based aid. These prestigious, highly-ranked colleges can be very generous with need-based aid. Keep in mind that they will probably determine your need on their own, using the CSS Profile and may take into account your home equity and other assets. Spoiler Alert your student will not be offered any scholarships at these schools due to high GPAs or test scores. The Ivy League doesnââ¬â¢t even have athletic scholarships. If a school has a low admission rate, they probably donââ¬â¢t offer merit scholarships. If youre likely to receive needs-based aid and your student is academically qualified to apply to more selective colleges, make sure to check the list of schools that meet 100% of financial need. Less Popular Scholarships for High School Seniors = More Success If thereââ¬â¢s a big name national scholarship for high school seniors that your teen is excited about, by all means, apply. But if youââ¬â¢re looking to maximize your studentââ¬â¢s success, itââ¬â¢s best to focus on local scholarships and those that are less popular. For instance, students often overlook scholarships that are less than $1,000, or ones that require art, poetry, or other creative submissions. It may take a bit more work to find these less-publicized awards, but your student will be more likely to win. It Pays to Be Different Colleges are the top source of college money. They give away this money in order to attract a wide range of students to their schools. Private scholarships are also often tightly focused. You have to fit into a specific niche that the scholarship is designed to help. As a result, itââ¬â¢s very helpful to think about the ways your student can bring diversity to a school, and focus on scholarships that promote a specific interest, background, or talent that your teen has. A student who wants to major in STEM-related subjects will have an easier time winning a scholarship to a college than someone focused on business or language. A female going into STEM will have additional opportunities. Someone from North Dakota going to school in New York brings diversity. Someone who has a different ethnic or religious background also stands out. Musicians and artists are unique. So are those interested in social entrepreneurship or other niche programs. Unfortunately, a student applying to the flagship in-state school nearby does not stand out and is less likely to win a scholarship from the school as a result. Scholarship Displacement and How it Can Affect Private Scholarships One of the most frustrating things about working so hard to win a variety of small private scholarships is that these awards can affect other need-based financial aid. Most schools do not use private scholarships as part of your EFC. As a result, you can be expected to pay the same amount out-of-pocket that you would be if your student hadnââ¬â¢t won any scholarships. Make sure to check into the scholarship displacement policies for the schools your student is interested in. Many schools consider private scholarships to reduce financial need. And in turn, this can mean your need-based aid is lower. Schools are also required to lower the financial aid package so that the total awards donââ¬â¢t exceed the schoolââ¬â¢s cost of attendance by more than $300. How to Find Generous Schools Thereââ¬â¢s nothing wrong with looking for private scholarships for high school seniors, but your best bet will always be finding schools that are generous with families in your situation. Private schools are more generous with scholarships than public universities and colleges, and even though they have a higher ââ¬Å"sticker price,â⬠you may find them more affordable than a local public school. HBS Application Essay Tips from Current Students
Itââ¬â¢s a busy time of year for business schools everywhere, especially here in Boston! Interviews for Round 1 applicants for Harvard Business Schoolââ¬â¢s Class of 2018 are currently taking place around the globe, and the January 6, 2016 Round 2 application deadline is just around the corner. That leaves about eight weeks for Round 2 applicants to finalize your GMAT/GRE results, gather your transcripts, coordinate your letters of recommendation, polish your resume, and last, but not least, perfect your essay. This last step, the essay, might prove to be the most tedious one of them all, which is why The Harbus, HBSââ¬â¢s student-run news organization, is here to help. As current HBS students, we can offer tips about the essay writing process, pulling from our own successful HBS application essays. Although each and every applicantââ¬â¢s background and story is unique, we feel passionate about sharing what we feel will benefit others as they approach this reflective and sometimes overwhelming writing and editing process. Essays submitted this year for the Class of 2018 will respond to the following prompt: Itââ¬â¢s the first day of class at HBS. You are in Aldrich Hall meeting your ââ¬Å"section.â⬠This is the group of 90 classmates who will become your close companions in the first-year MBA classroom. Our signature case method participant-based learning model ensures that you will get to know each other very well. The bonds you collectively create throughout this shared experience will be lasting. Introduce yourself. (No word limit) Here are 10 ââ¬ËHelpful Harbus Tipsââ¬â¢ for approaching your HBS application essay, written by current HBS students: 1. Think about an experience that demonstrates and combines both the things you are passionate about and the strengths that you would bring to HBS. 2. Donââ¬â¢t let the open-ended nature of the essay prompt intimidate you too much. Work a good amount of pre-writing into your schedule so you can try a few different options before honing in on and committing to one. Once youââ¬â¢ve found the right one, material should naturally start to flow. 3. If you are applying to more than one school, try to make the core learning(s) of your essay applicable to as many of the essay prompts as possible. 4. Consider incorporating a common theme that can be traced throughout the entire application, from start to finish. This will help the essay come full circle. 5. Consult your family and friends along the way to make sure that your various topics of choice are an accurate and genuine representation of who you are. Youââ¬â¢d be surprised how much you can learn about your own experience by talking to family members and friends who know you the best. 6. You donââ¬â¢t necessarily have to think about standard workplace experiences when figuring out different situations that demonstrate key skills and qualities. Your best success stories, for example, arenââ¬â¢t always going to be those that transpired during work hours. 7. When brainstorming about examples of your leadership experiences, for example, come up with a list of about five, and decide which situation or experience shows what aspect of your personality is the hardest to see in your application. 8. Write a cohesive story that aligns with both why you want to go to business school and what you want to do after business school with your MBA degree. 9. Not everyone writes about conventional topics in their essays, so donââ¬â¢t be afraid to center your essay around an unconventional one that brought inspiration to you. For example, a current student in the Class of 2017 centered his essay around The Simpsons T.V. show. In the essay, he explores the parallels between themes contained within the T.V. show and those within his philosophical thinking, driving his adolescent curiosities and adulthood decisions. 10. Your essay doesnââ¬â¢t necessarily need to emphasize your professional accomplishments. Remember, your resume, awards, and recommendation letters may already sufficiently do this. Be careful not to repeat as the essay is your opportunity to highlight and communicate aspects of your life that the admissions team doesnââ¬â¢t already know from other material. 11. Bonus Tip: This should be obvious, but make sure you dont misspell the names of the faculty members you say you dream of working with one day! Mosaic of Thought Workshop for Reading Comprehension
When was the last time you finished a book and you were asked to complete a worksheet about it? You probably havent had to do that since you were a student yourself, however, this is something that most of us ask our students to do on a daily basis. To me, this doesnt make much sense. Shouldnt we teach students to read and comprehend books in a manner that is consistent with how they will read and comprehend as adults? The book Mosaic of Thought by Ellin Oliver Keene and Susan Zimmermann, as well as the Readers Workshop method, moves away from worksheets with comprehension questions that use more real-world, student-driven instruction. Rather than depend solely on small reading groups, the Readers Workshop method blends whole group instruction, small needs-based groups, and individual conferring to guide students through the application of the seven basic comprehension strategies. What are the thinking strategies that all proficient readers use as they read? Determining What is Important - Identifying themes and diminishing focus on less important ideas or pieces of informationDrawing Inferences - Combining background knowledge and textual information to draw conclusions and interpret factsUsing Prior Knowledge - Building on previous knowledge and experiences to aid in comprehension of the textAsking Questions - Wondering and inquiring about the book before, during, and after readingMonitoring Comprehension and Meaning - Using an inner voice to think about if the text makes sense or notCreating Mental Images - Implementing the five senses to build images in the mind that enhance the experience of reading Believe it or not, many children may not even know that they are supposed to be thinking as they read! Ask your students if they know to think as they read - you may be shocked by what they tell you! Ask your students, Did you know that its OK not to understand everything you read? They will most likely look at you, surprised, and answer, It is? Talk a little bit about some of the ways that you can build your understanding when you are confused. As you know, even adult readers, are confused sometimes when they read. But, we bet it made them feel a little better to know that they dont have to fake understanding when they read; the best readers question, reread, look for context clues, and more in order to better understand and move through the text. To get started with the Mosaic of Thought reading strategies, choose one of the comprehension strategies to focus on for a full six to ten weeks. Even if you only get to a few of the strategies in a year, you will be doing a major educational service for your students. Here is a sample schedule for an hour-long session: 15-20 minutes - Present a mini-lesson that models how to use the given strategy for a certain book. Try to pick a book that really lends itself to this strategy. Think aloud and you demonstrate how good readers think as they read. At the end of the mini-lesson, give the kids an assignment for the day that they will do as they read the books of their own choosing. For example, Kids, today you will use sticky notes to mark the places where you could really visualize what was going on in your book. 15 minutes - Meet with small needs-based groups to meet the needs of students who need extra guidance and practice in this comprehension area. You can also build in time here to meet with 1 to 2 small guided reading groups, as you may be doing in your classroom now. 20 minutes - Use this time for one-on-one conferring with your students. Try to get to 4 to 5 students per day, if you can. As you meet, delve deep with each student and have him or her demonstrate to you exactly how they are using this strategy as they read. 5-10 minutes - Meet again as a whole group to review what everyone accomplished and learned for the day, in relation to the strategy. Of course, as with any instructional technique that you encounter, you can adapt this concept and this suggested schedule to fit your needs and your classroom situation. Source Oliver Keene, Ellin. Oedipus The King The Presence Of Gods - 1509 Words
The presence of gods in Oedipus the King, although it is not explicit nor do they appear physically present, is distinct and unmistakable. The figure of Apollo and his Oracle declares itself as a prominent being to Grecian society, the place where both Oedipusââ¬â¢ biological parents went to uncover the future of their son before his birth and where Creon is sent to uncover the reason behind the plague of Thebes. The role of God in this play reveals the truth of the future, binding the three elements of time to form the course of the plot. Although it appears as though the gods declared Oedipusââ¬â¢ fate, the truth simply could be that the gods simply know the course of fate or have foreseen it and presented it to the people as what is destined to be, not what they have destined it to be. With such an ideology in mind, it could be that the gods did not force the hand of fate rather saw the outcome and presented it, letting the people decide what they would do without complete a uthoritarian rule. The gods never lied to the people, much rather it his the tragic flaw of humans such as pride and imprudence which leads the people to believe all is at the fault of the gods. Thus, the knowledge which enables fear for the final revelation of Oedipus is solely due to Apolloââ¬â¢s meritorious status, granted by Sophocles himself and the characteristic flaw of mankind.Sophocles outlined the characteristics of an ideal tragic hero by making Oedipus ââ¬Å"superiorâ⬠to the average man, not only in socialShow MoreRelatedGods vs. Mortals in Oedipus Rex the Bacchae1572 Words à |à 7 Pagesthe mightiest, there are stories about many other gods demonstrating their power over mortals. Music s Influence On Music - 1610 Words
Previous attention from scholarly articles and psychology journals have indicated that listening to classical music can heighten a personââ¬â¢s ability to learn and focus. This has prompted some teachers to start integrating the playing of classical music in their classrooms to raise the amount of information retained by their students and make their work more efficient. A study done at Stanford University indicated music heightens a personââ¬â¢s ability to learn because it ââ¬Å"engages the areas of the brain involved with paying attentionâ⬠(2007). In contrast to that theory, a study from Applied Cognitive Psychology showed that listening to music while performing a simple task does not help cognitive performance (2010). With the multiple studies available to the general public on the topic of music and the ability to focus, it is hard to draw one, single conclusion as to which claim is correct. While both of the claims that music may or may not heighten a personââ¬â ¢s ability to learn and focus may have evidence as support, there seems to be more sufficient evidence and credible studies that make the claim that music does indeed increase the ability to learn and focus. People are always coming up with their own ideas and theories and ideas about how things should be perceived and understood.
